PiroBI vs Power BI vs Tableau vs Qlik
Looking for a GDPR-compliant BI solution without cloud risk and without IT overhead? Here's the honest comparison — with clear facts.
The key facts
- Power BI Processes data in Microsoft Azure — telemetry data flows to US servers. Setup takes 4–12 weeks.
- Tableau Requires 8–20 weeks of setup and significant implementation costs — often oversized for SMEs.
- Qlik Sense Enterprise tool — typically not economical for SMEs with fewer than 50 employees.
- PiroBI Processes all data locally in the browser via DuckDB-WASM. No cloud, no setup, no IT team. GDPR compliance is architecturally guaranteed.

The GDPR problem with cloud BI tools
All three major vendors are US companies on US cloud infrastructure — that's a GDPR-relevant reality.
EU data residency and DPA with SCCs available. Problem: telemetry and diagnostic data still flows to US servers. In March 2024, the EDPS ruled that the EU Commission's use of M365 (incl. Power BI) violates GDPR.
Since 2024, data residency in Germany (AWS Frankfurt) — a real improvement. As a Salesforce subsidiary, similar US concerns apply. On-premise via Tableau Server offers control but requires significant IT infrastructure.
Frankfurt data center, ISO 27001/27018, good GDPR documentation. Still an AWS-hosted US company at its core — data leaves the organization.
All calculations run locally via DuckDB-WASM in the browser. No data transfer — neither to Germany nor to the US. No policy to trust, no certification to verify: the architecture makes data transfer technically impossible.
Tool details for SMEs
Power BI
The most widely used BI solution in DACH — often already included in M365 subscriptions. Biggest pitfall for SMEs: DAX. The formula language is powerful but complex — even Excel-savvy employees need weeks to become productive. Without an internal BI expert, you depend on consultants. Typical setup time: 4–12 weeks.
Tableau
The most powerful visualization tool on the market — but significant implementation effort (8–20 weeks) and high barriers to entry. Tableau Prep for data preparation is a separate tool with separate costs. "Cost" is consistently the top complaint in G2 and Capterra reviews.
Qlik Sense
Capacity-based pricing model since March 2025. Community forums consistently report that Qlik is not suitable for small businesses — the effort for setup and operation far exceeds typical SME resources.
